Nyai Ro, 2017

Suvi Wahyudianto

This artwork is visualizing Suvi’s experience when he met a hard-working Madurese woman in Jogjakarta, her name is not well described, but everybody call her Nyai Ro, a street vendor who sells sate. She is a strong and hard-working woman. She continues her business in selling sate even when she had to face a tragedy (her husband just died some months ago). Through this artwork, Suvi wants to show how Madurese people empower their identity even after they move to a new place. The identity is indicated by the usage of extra name “Cak (for male) and Nyai (for female)”.
